The origin of funny aprons and novelty aprons.
Before today people didn't have the luxury of owning extensive
wardrobes and washing of clothing was not done on a frequent basis. Even in the
1940's and 1950's many folks used wringer washers, hung clothing on the line to
dry, and every piece had to be ironed. Permanent press had not yet been
invented, and although cotton jersey was available, most children and ladies
wore woven cotton housedresses and play dresses. Shorts, tops, and slacks were
reserved for beach, vacation or special occasions, and only for the most modern
of ladies. Aprons in the past and
today, including funny aprons, i.e.;
what part of party funny apron, served a
practical purpose. They covered up the dress underneath and protected it from
soiling, and made washing easier - you could wash the apron every couple of
days, but wore the dress underneath 4-5 days or a week. As well as being
practical, they were funny. Novelty
aprons can be printed with many different messages, i.e.; real
cool grandma aprons. Housewives,
school teachers, children, shop-keepers, even secretaries all wore various
styles of aprons over their clothing daily.
Early
novelty aprons.
In 1939, the hit movie Wizard of Oz caused a huge
resurgence in popularity of pinafores (many of them gingham). By the 1940's,
novelty aprons gained a cinched waistline, and were often gaily trimmed with
rick-rack, buttons, and pockets of contrasting color. This excerpt from fashion
advice of the day regarding frocks, smocks, aprons, and housecoats in the
1940's: "Early in the year is the time to make wash frocks for spring and
summer - to have time to make them nicely - to do nice finishing, make nice
buttonholes, and have such ready for wear." Before the funny and novelty
aprons, i.e.; tuxedo funny apron, were available
aprons were a serious fashion element, not just an afterthought cover-up! In the
1950's half- aprons of highly starched cotton organdy (sheer, see- through)
trimmed with lace were popular for special occasions, as well as two- piece
aprons and short smocks of bright cotton prints for every day.
Not much change has occurred for the household or
barbeque apron since then. Most are
still make from cotton; including the funny aprons and novelty aprons
we carry on the site, i.e.; not easy being a mom novelty apron. The material is
stronger and more stain resistant. Most are available with adjustable straps so
they fit most people. Also they are available in many different colors to match
todays fashions. And of course
the most important progress for funny aprons has been created by the use of silk
screening. You can have many
different clever and funny sayings imprinted on an apron.
